About NETWAS Uganda

A Ugandan non-governmental organisation working since 1996 to improve water supply, sanitation and hygiene through capacity building, research, knowledge management and advocacy.

Who we are

Network for Water and Sanitation (NETWAS) Uganda was registered in 1996 as a national non-profit organisation serving the water, sanitation and hygiene sector.

We work from national to grassroots level, in rural and urban areas, across all regions of Uganda. Our aim is to be a centre of excellence for knowledge management and capacity building in WASH.

Our work covers water as well as sanitation, and links WASH to the sectors it depends on: health, education, environment, climate resilience and local governance.

Our network

NETWAS Uganda is affiliated with NETWAS International, part of the International Training Network (ITN) for water and waste management, and works with it on technical support in East and Southern Africa.

Since 2004 we have hosted the Uganda WASH Resource Centre, a national platform for sector knowledge. We have been a partner of IRC (now Riva) on learning initiatives in Uganda since 2003.

How we work

Four ways of working shape every project we take on.

Knowledge management

We document and share what works, through the Uganda WASH Resource Centre, research and practical tools.

Capacity building

We train village health teams, extension workers, water committees, teachers and district staff so that services keep working after projects end.

Evidence-based advocacy

We bring field evidence to district councils, ministries and sector platforms, from local by-laws to national guidance.

Institutional and organisational development

We strengthen the systems behind services: district plans, community structures, water integrity and the organisations that deliver WASH.
