Our work

Seven connected areas of work and the technical services we offer to partners.

Water, sanitation and hygiene

Household, school and community WASH that people keep using.

We help communities and districts reach and sustain safe sanitation, hygiene and water services. Our work covers sanitation demand creation, hygiene promotion, sanitation marketing, open defecation free (ODF) verification and the monitoring that keeps villages from slipping back.

Water resources management and governance

Water points and catchments that are managed well and fairly.

Services fail when nobody is responsible for them. We map and assess water points, support water user committees and parish structures, and promote water integrity so that communities can hold service providers to account.

Knowledge management, research and evidence

Evidence that districts, practitioners and policy makers can use.

Since 2004 we have hosted the Uganda WASH Resource Centre. We carry out baseline studies, assessments and action research, and turn findings into policy briefs, case studies and practical tools.

Capacity building and institutional strengthening

Skills and systems that keep services working after projects end.

We train village health teams, extension workers, water committees, teachers and district staff, and help district departments improve their plans, monitoring tools and coordination.

Advocacy, accountability and community engagement

Bringing community evidence to the people who make decisions.

We support communities to take part in decisions about their services and take field evidence to district councils, ministries, the media and sector platforms. We have supported the processes for Agago District's WASH ordinance and Kalongo's solid and liquid waste by-law.

Strategic partnerships and cross-sector initiatives

Joining WASH with health, education, environment and governance.

We work in consortia with universities, NGOs, networks and community organisations, and connect WASH to the sectors it depends on. Partnerships let us combine our district relationships and WASH expertise with the strengths of others.

Technical services

We offer technical assistance to development partners, government and NGOs: studies that produce reliable evidence, training that builds lasting skills, and tools and processes that strengthen district WASH systems.
